My name is Mamadou, and I am 36 years old. For many years, I worked in an ink manufacturing company, a role that gave me stability and purpose. However, in 2017, my life changed dramatically when I suffered a serious accident. The injuries I sustained were severe and left me with a permanent disability. From that moment, everything I had once taken for granted seemed impossible to achieve.
The aftermath of the accident was filled with challenges. I struggled daily, not only with physical pain but also with feelings of hopelessness. Recovery was never straightforward, it was a journey filled with obstacles, both mental and physical. At times, the weight of despair felt overwhelming, and I questioned whether I would ever regain a sense of normality.
Despite these difficulties, I knew that employment could be the key to rebuilding my life. Work, for me, represented more than just financial independence, it symbolized dignity, purpose, and the chance to contribute meaningfully again. With this in mind, I began searching for voluntary opportunities that would allow me to test my abilities without placing too much strain on my health. I found a role with the Salvation Army and worked there for a couple of days. Unfortunately, I relapsed soon after. The setback was devastating, leaving me more hopeless and uncertain about my future.
Still, I refused to give up. I took time to focus on my well-being, gradually rebuilding my strength and confidence. When I felt ready, I resumed my search for employment opportunities. This time, I was determined to approach things differently. I realized I needed guidance, preparation, and a new career path that would align with my circumstances. While searching online with the keywords “jobs for people with disability,” I discovered EmployAbility.
From the very beginning, the program stood out. It was simple and easy to understand, yet rich in content, educational, and highly relevant to my situation. The structure of the program was straightforward. I had the privilege of working with Lisa Huynh (Hi Lisa!), whose guidance was exceptional. Lisa was considerate, supportive, and deeply committed to helping me see that there are opportunities for me in the workforce, even with my disability. She also helped me recognize my potential and the skills I had been overlooking. Her encouragement and coaching gave me a great deal of confidence.
Although I am not currently seeking employment due to being away from Australia, I now feel equipped with the knowledge and skills I need to succeed. The program has given me invaluable tools to prepare for employment, and I am confident that when the time comes, I will be able to find meaningful work and thrive.
Without hesitation, I would recommend the EmployAbility program to anyone facing similar challenges. It has added incredible value to my aspirations and restored my confidence.
Thank you very much, EmployAbility (Spinal Cord Injuries Australia), for helping me rediscover hope and purpose.
